As a blogger and a small business owner himself, Derick Schaefer of Orangecast Social Media has seen the good, bad, and the ugly of WordPress hosting. In this discussion, Derick will cover the basics of WordPress hosting to help non-technical bloggers make the best decisions with their budget and provide clear guidance to their technical "go to" person or hosting company help desk. Then he will shift gears and dive into the deep technical details and secrets of how to create a high performance, yet affordable WordPress installation capable of sustaining the thousands of concurrent users that social media spikes can bring to a blog. The technical portion of the discussion will focus on Linux based hosting and will highlight a high performance configuration of MediaTemple's new VE server. Derick Schaefer is the founder of Dallas based Orangecast Social Media and is passionate about technology, social media, and WordPress. Orangecast owns and runs blogs including MidwestSportsFans.Com, Picchore.Com, and How-To-Blog.TV. The company also runs blogs for several clients including McCuistionTV.Com and CorporateComplianceInsights.Com. In addition to blogging and consulting, Orangecast and its employees are the creators of WP-MalWatch, a free WordPress plugin designed to help detect evidence of hackers leave behind in blogs. Prior to founding Orangecast, Derick spent 10 years at the Microsoft Corporation. The first half of his career at the software giant he dedicated to working with large scale systems based on Windows Server, SQL Server, SNA Server, Services for UNIX, and Active Directory. He later transitioned into a leadership role where he managed technology sales worldwide for the company's Global Accounts division. Though Derick has been responsible for highly technical publications in the software industry including "Enterprise Class Storage in Windows 2000" and "Development Considerations for Storage Applications in Windows 2000", he is best known for presenting technology topics in basic terms that everyone can understand.
