Speech Recognition with Phillip Hunter
Speech recognition is mostly known for use in desktop dictation and interactive voice response applications. While there's been some exploration into other areas, such growth is still early-stage. Recently, though, multiple companies have begun looking at the mobile phone as an area of promise for apps that can make use of speech recognition. Of course, many of us realize the irony of the "new" thought of using your voice with a phone. So, the question becomes, "Why is this being seen as a new opportunity now and what does that opportunity look like?"
This talk will look at the conjecture of the last few years, at some of the wilder claims, and at the very practical work being done. We'll discuss how speech reco on mobile devices is in some ways well behind where we thought it would be, and in other ways is ahead. Woven through all of that will be design principles that should be considered by anyone creating mobile apps in the next few years, as it becomes clear that speech is not just an alternative UI, but is emerging alongside gesture and touch as a required part of the interaction suite.
